Chapter Eight

It was the next morning in HQ, just after breakfast.

Jenna said, “So I spoke to my grams a few minutes ago. The family had no luck sourcing a scanner that could defeat an enhanced cloak. She believes some of them may have it, but they aren’t willing to sell it to anyone on Earth. Not even a private billionaire like me. I think a lot of them are bitter toward Earth, and in having to move to a new world to have freedom to invent and sell what they want. Even if they like it there.

“They might not agree with her methods, but my family seems to think Bethany has a silent cheering section in her fellow mad scientists. That the government is just getting what they deserve, for driving so many mad scientists insane over the years with their oppressive limitations.

“I can even see their point, to an extent. But nothing was stopping Bethany from selling her inventions to the civilian population. Maybe not the sensor tech, but she could’ve sold learning devices like you speculated she’d be able to. Not just for teaching supers like you how to control their powers and become masters of magic, but also… anything really. Education in general. A device to impress a full course of knowledge into minds, much like Anna put the spell book in your head in a way that can’t be forgotten or misremembered.”

I nodded thoughtfully, “You’re probably right, and I agree with your assessment, which all together puts us back at square one.”

She nodded in agreement, “We need to wait for her to make a mistake, or for the government egg heads to rediscover that breakthrough. I don’t think we have any options left to investigate, unless you want to try magic.”

I frowned, “What do you mean?”

She shrugged, “We know Meta-energy can create a scan to detect things hidden by advanced cloaks. I can do it, after all. So… could you focus on the idea and do it too? Build a spell that can ping thousands of miles, like a radar wave can ping solid objects, but only get a return on something under an enhanced cloak. I don’t know if that would be dangerous for you or not, but we know meta-energy is up to the job, so it won’t fail from that angle.”

I gave that some thought, and I couldn’t see why it wouldn’t work. Most superpowers were limited to a tenth of a mile to two thirds of a mile, some few went farther. I was fairly sure that was the power picking the most efficient point in balance between range and power. The farther a power went, the weaker and more dispersed it would get, so eventually there’d be the point of minimizing returns.

But a ping wave might be possible, put all that power into a split-second punch out, instead of maintaining a field that large, it’d only be active for… a thousandth of a second. I could start out small, and make
